PEOPLE SKILLS FOR INFLUENCE AND ACCOUNTABILITY

Introduction

People who don’t manage still need to get things done through other people. Yet they don’t have the position power to do so. People Skills for Influence and Accountability gives people a set of core skills to navigate the gray areas of collaborating. These skills help people build relationships as they ensure the team completes their work on target.

Learning Goals

In People Skills for Influence and Accountability, participants will learn to:

  • listen for further clarity and commitment;

  • work through performance blocks collaboratively;

  • influence others through respectful, above board, two-way conversations;

  • gain agreement and commitment to results, requests, and behavior;

  • hold peers accountable when agreements get off track; and

  • manage strong emotions to minimize defensiveness.

People Skills Model

At the center of the influence and accountability skills are the core communication skills of listening and speaking which foster a mutual, respectful dialogue. Those skills can be used to advise and solve problems, get agreements about work and behavior, follow up those agreements with recognition and recommitment, and manage strong emotions in a way that minimizes defensiveness and brings down the other person’s emotionality.

Style and Format

People Skills for Influence and Accountability teaches a practical set of replicable behaviors that are adaptable to any personality and management situation. The design of the course is light on theory and heavy on practice. Rather than role-playing, People Skills for Influence and Accountability uses “real plays,” situations drawn from your organization and managers’ experience. By watching demonstrations, doing hands-on experimentation with each skill, and receiving feedback from facilitators and peers, participants integrate the skills so they are ready to use them successfully the very next day.
