Candor Skills

When confronted with a "candor moment"--giving hard feedback, supporting an unpopular recommendation, or pointing out a systemic problem--employees are often afraid to speak their minds. They worry that their ideas will get shot down, that they’ll be labeled troublemakers, that they’ll risk alienating the people they work with, or that they’ll sabotage their own careers. It’s safer to keep quiet than to speak up. But every time an employee withholds, a problem goes unsolved or an opportunity is missed. How much more could your organization achieve if you could tap this buried reserve of employee knowledge, talent, and engagement?

Candor Skills helps managers and key players foster an environment where employees can speak what they think. They explore what gets in the way of their own candor and also how they block candor in others. They learn skills that can promote candor, and practice their skills in conversations where candor is essential to performance and morale.

LEARNING GOALS

In this course, participants learn how to:
  • gain collaborative commitments from employees on tasks and objectives;

  • help employees resolve problems in a way that encourages openness and ownership;

  • initiate difficult conversations and manage strong emotions; and

  • identify underlying needs to find new paths for resolving conflict.
